A single original watercolour postcard each month, painted from the same spot on Margate seafront and posted with a real stamp and a handwritten message on the back. The subject never changes — it is always that stretch of coast — but the sea, the sky and the light do, which turns out to be the whole idea. Cheap on purpose. The oldest subscriber has 61 of them in a shoebox.

A subscriber sent me a photograph of all 61 cards laid out on a table in order. Seeing five years of the same view at once is a strange thing and I have not entirely recovered.

What went out, month by month
Almost no horizon. Two shades of grey and one gull.
The one everyone photographs. Painted at 9:40pm.
A wall of rain moving in from the northeast. Painted quickly, for obvious reasons.
Nothing visible. Technically a painting of fog. Divisive.
